Chest pain when breathing happens due to many health problems. The best thing to do is to visit the doctor when somebody experiences the chest pain especially when pain gets severe a visit to doctor becomes must. Though most pains of the chest are not life threatening but all those pains what develop suddenly and are severe in intensity require physician’s immediate attention.

Broken ribs, Pneumonia, Pericardits, Pulmonary Embolism, Costochondritis, Pneumothorax, are some of the reasons behind this pain.

Broken ribs often cause the chest pain when breathing to rise. Ribs fracture in accidents sometimes and they cause the pain while breathing and pressing the chest. The most interesting case of chest pain when breathing is Pericarditis. Pericarditis happens when the heart surrounding membrane becomes inflamed. No reasons have been found of its cause. Its main symptom is a stabbing pain that rises in the chest when breathing; this pain resembles with the pain of a heart attack and its victim mistakes it to be a heart attack often. Steroid and non-steroid drugs along with bed rest are recommended for its treatment.

Pneumothorax and Pulmonary Embolism are two life-threatening cases of the chest pain when breathing. A collapsed lung refers to Pneumothorax, it happens due to chest injuries, mild cases heal on their own but severe cases require medical attention. First symptom of Pneumothorax is sudden pain in the chest. Pulmonary Embolism happens when blood-supplying arteries of blood to lungs have clot in the artery. Skin turning blue, sweating, coughing up blood, breath-shortness are in symptoms of Pulmonary Embolism. It can be life threatening if not treated properly.

Costochondritis is a chest wall pain. In Costochondritis, inflammation occurs of the cartilage that exists between the ribs and the sternum. Main symptom of Costochondritis is the title of this article and most common cause is injury to the chest. Nothing to worry about, as it will disappear by itself however anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants can relieve it.

Pneumonia’s symptoms include chest pain when breathing deeply and during coughing. Pneumonia normally happens due to bacterial infections and for its treatment, antibiotics are used. Pneumonia in itself is life threatening and chest pain when breathing is one of its symptoms.

The most complicated case of chest pain is Pleurisy. In Pleurisy, lining of the cavity that surrounds the lungs gets inflammation. Primary symptom of Pleurisy is the titled pain, shortness of breath, fever, dry cough and chills are in its other symptoms. Most common cause is viral infection, but pneumonia and autoimmune disease could also be the reason.
